RMS Queen Mary

Construction and Nomenclature
With the launch of its Bremen of Germany and Europe in service, the British did not want to stay out in the race for shipbuilding. White Star Line began construction of its 60,000-ton Oceanic in 1928, while a ship's planned 75,000 ton Cunard unnamed own.
The construction of the ship, then known only as "Hull Number 534", began in December 1930 on the River Clyde by John Brown & Engineering and Shipbuilding Company Shipyard Clydebank Scotland. Work stopped in December 1931 because the Great Depression and Cunard applied to the British Government for a loan to complete 534. The loan was granted, with enough money to complete the Queen Mary and build a running mate, Hull No. 552, which would be the Queen Elizabeth. The ship was named after Queen Mary, consort of King George V. Until its release the name she was given was to be maintained secret. Legend has it that Cunard for the name of the ship "Victoria" in accordance with company tradition of naming its vessels ending in "ia". However, when company representatives asked King's permission for the name of the ocean liner after Britain's largest "queen," said his wife, Queen Mary, would be delighted. And so the legend, the delegation was of course no other choice but to report that No. 534 would be called RMS Queen Mary. This story was denied by company officials, and the names of rulers traditionally have been used only for capital ships of the Royal Navy. Some support for the story was provided by the publisher of The Washington Post Felix Morley, who sailed as a guest of Cunard Line, on the maiden voyage of the Queen Mary in 1936. In his autobiography of 1979, For the Record, Morley wrote that he was at the table with Sir Percy Bates, president of Cunard Line. Bates told him the story of naming the ship "provided that you will not print it in my lifetime. "The name Queen Mary might also have been decided as a compromise between Cunard and White Star Line, Cunard that had recently merged, both lines had a tradition of using names or ending in "ic" with the White Star and "would" with Cunard.
History (1934-1939)

The design of the Queen Mary was criticized for being too traditional, especially when the hull of the Normandie was revolutionary, a cutter with a bow-shaped simplified. Except for her cruiser stern, she seemed to be just an expanded version of his predecessors Cunard's pre World War I era. World War II

In late August 1939, the Queen Mary was executed in a return to New York to Southampton. The international situation led to her being escorted by the battle of HMS Hood. She arrived safely, and went back to New York in 2001 September. After World War II

From September 1946 to July 1947, Queen Mary was retired for service of passengers, adding air conditioning and update its configuration of docks for 711 first class, 707 cabin class and 577 tourist class passengers. Many offers were made, but it was Long Beach, Calif., who beat Japanese scrap dealers. And then, the Queen Mary was retired from service in 1967, while his running mate, Queen Elizabeth was withdrawn in 1968. RMS Queen Elizabeth 2 took over the transatlantic route in 1969.
