More to know about the Great Lakes
The huge size of the system of Great Lakes water is very inspiring. The Great Lakes consist of five lakes that include Lake Superior, Michigan, Erie and Huron Ontario. Their channels allow lakes to be connected to make it the largest freshwater system in the world.
The Great Lakes hold about 23 000 km3 (5,500 cu. Mi.) Water. They cover more than 94, 000 square kilometers (244,000 km ².) And hold about one-fifth of freshwater systems. This is approximately 18 percent of the world's water supply.
Canals linking the Great Lakes region include:
The Santa Maria River: A 60-kilometer waterway that flows from Lake Superior to Lake Huron.
St. Clair and Detroit River channel A 89 km extension connecting Lake Huron with Lake Erie.
Niagara River: a river 35 km in length which connects Lake Erie and Lake Ontario.
The water from the Great Lagos flows from Lake Ontario to the St. Lawrence River and then flows about 1000 km to the Atlantic Ocean.
Facts about the Great Lakes include:
Lake Erie: The lake contains 17 large urban areas and farming practices are an important industry. The lake area is about 26,000 km2. (10,000 square miles) is shallowest of the five Great Lakes.
Lake Ontario: This lake is the smallest of the Great Lakes. The main urban areas, like Hamilton and Toronto are located along its banks. The name originates from Lake Ontario, a Huron word meaning "great lake. "Why is Lake Ontario, at the end of the bottom of the Great Lakes, is affected by human activities throughout the basin of Lake Michigan, Superior, Huron and Erie.
Lake Michigan: Lake Michigan is the second largest of the Great Lakes. It contains the areas of Milwaukee and Chicago. This area has about 8 million people. Lake Michigan is the only Great Lake entirely within the borders of the United States.
Lake Huron: Many Canadians and Americans own homes along the shores of Lake Huron. He contains the Flint and Saginaw areas, Bay City. The Saginaw River basin is the creation and Saginaw Bay has a fishery worker.
Lake Superior: This is the largest deepest lake, and coldest of the Great Lakes. Much of the areas in the basin are forested. The water contains pollutants least because there is little agriculture.
Only the polar ice caps contain more fresh water than the Great Lakes. These lakes are an important and delicate ecosystem. Not only do they affect human life because transport industry, the fishing industry, and agriculture, affect wildlife and climate. The lakes were exploited for financial gain, but now conservationists are recognizing the crucial role they play in maintaining environmental balance. Measures to balance properly the Great Lakes and their ecosystems are now being implemented to ensure they are not destroyed by pollution and industrialization.
Because the Great Lakes are surrounded by two countries, cooperation is necessary to protect the lakes from human damage. Protection of lakes requires respecting and treating the Great Lakes as an important and contributes positively vital to the planet, so we can promote a healthy and sustainable environment.
