‘Gotcha’: International Marine Insurance Fraud and Conspiracy: A Study Guide

$7.34

STEAL, CHEAT, AND LIE YOUR WAY TO THE TOP–a growing practice on both sides of the Atlantic that’s costing consumers millions each year. Marine insurance is based on Uberrimae Fidei or utmost good faith but it hasn’t worked out that way. Author Ed Geary closely examines the schemes of marine insurance fraud and conspiracy that involves not only boat owners and policy holders, but insurance brokers, and marine underwriters. During his five year USCG training mission of the Venezuelan Coastguard Geary’s disclosure of the Central Intelligence Agency’s clandestine Operation Deep Six to destabilize the elected government of Venezuela and install Hugo Chavez as president put him in the cross-hairs of the Agency. Silencing him became an even greater priority when Geary exposed the CIA’s theft of high value yachts used in idiotic schemes to smuggle narcotics from Colombia to the United States. Gotcha delves into the flawed business practices of The London Salvage Association that ultimately destroyed an organization that’s been around before the reign of Queen Victoria and exposes the fraud and “trickle-down-corruption” that has tainted the Lloyd’s Agency System. After the melt-down of ENRON and WorldCom the cover-up of Arthur Andersen’s fraudulent ship valuation conspiracy by the once reliable Lloyd’s List in London challenges the imagination.

A SERIES OF REPULSES. The offices of the Knickerbocker Insurance Company were close at hand. Barbara walked towards them listlessly. Somehow her interview with Mr. Randolph had left a bad taste in her mouth, to put it metaphorically. They were evidently very busy that morning at the Knickerbocker, and it was some time before Barbara could find any one to take in her letter of introduction. Finally the colored man came hastily through the hallway and she preferred her request, handing over the note. ” Yes’m, I’ll see’m,” mumbled the darky, and made off, leaving the caller standing there. And it was at this instant that she heard her name pronounced in accents of delighted surprise : ” Miss Van Dyke, don’t you remember me ? ” She was puzzled for an instant to know from where the voice proceeded, as there was no one at the moment in the corridor save herself. Then, turning her head, through the wicket in the glasspartition of the clerks’ quarters she saw Allan Thurwell. As by magic the walls of that big insurance building on bustling Broadway melted away, and acres of Adirondack woods took their place. But they were only the background to the mental picture that swiftly rose before her. There was the boat on the lake, in which she had sat so many times during that fortnight two summers before, while the young man whose handsome head she now saw framed by the clerk’s window rowed her lazily beneath outspreading trees or close to lofty boulders, the while they talked of many things andgrew to think they knew each other well. And this was the first time she had seen him since. For an instant she forgot her dejection of spirits, lost sight of the errand on which she had come. “It is awfully nice to see you again, Mr. Thurwell,” she said,…

When Frederick Watts announces that the family will be leaving England to homestead in Canada, seven-year-old Amy thinks it sounds like a grand adventure; however, even the boat ride doesn’t go the way that she imagined it. As she nurses her seasick mother and siblings while her father drinks in the ship’s smoking room, she begins to realize that her new life is not going to be easy. The Watts family faces not only the elements but also their personal demons as they struggle to create a new life in a strange land. As their lives become increasingly fraught with tragedy, they must draw on one another for strength. These circumstances soon force Amy and her siblings to shoulder responsibilities far beyond their years. In the face of the trials and hardships forced upon them, the children form bonds of love that will last them a lifetime. Amy learns that there is indeed a time for everything, including A Time to Go. ‘In A Time To Go, LaVine Rathkey tells a compelling story of the full range of immigrant experience: the transatlantic voyage, trancontinental travel, rural and urban settlement, and the struggles encountered on a wilderness farm. The characters evoke compassion, and sometimes anger. A good read of an era without the safety nets of labor laws, health insurance, and entitlement programs.’ Barry Ostrom, a Monmouth writer.
