travel before the period of Internet
I've been traveling for over 40 years – with the thumb in my early days, boots on the Scouts, a Lambretta came next and then my first old banger followed by newer old bangers to the beaches of the Costa Brava.
My thumb, boots, bikes and bangers took me all over Europe and the United Kingdom before discovering that a charter flight to Spain in an old "Connie" would take me to the beaches and bars much faster and allow more time to enjoy opportunities for local travel by horse or by car, the occasional bus and train.

Today the scenario is spectacular and still the best way to go is still a road, for rent or purchase a motorhome car, bike or take the bus, train or tour, but remember the maps, a fly rod, good boots and take your time.
My favorite part of the Canada / US adventure tourism has to be Northern BC / Alaska, hiking Chilkoot Trail through the stages of goldseekers 1898. The Northwest Territories to the river by canoe and Yukon Nahannie drive from Dawson City to Chicken, Alaska. If you like the outdoors and can put up with some bugs, cast a fly and scale of some hills or driving on dirt roads endless sharing space with moose, caribou, moose, bears and eagles, then these are the places to put on your list. The pleasures and experiences in the conduct of Inuvik on the Dempster Highway and the Prudhoe Bay on the road or even Dalton Canol Road can be felt only by doing them. I would have mentioned the Alaska Highway, but is now an easy drive instead of the above.
Today the cost of driving these distances may mean sharing the journey with others is necessary, but simply Vanning or RVing and camping is a great way to see beyond the horizon. Some adventures route that now must be booked in advance while we walk Denali Pass and the Chilkoot was just a case of turning the service, registering with the local office and ranger position forward. A little forward planning is more necessary for today's traveler and cost considerations of flights or long drives have to be addressed in some way with more careful planning. In the days of gas prices reasonable I would not even consider the costs driving or flying and has taken to Key West, on the northwest coast to the west coast of Baja and the west coast of New York. I once flew my taildragger 1946 Fleet Pacific to the Atlantic and back with about 5 liters an hour of avgas. Before the oil and credit crisis that led in Rio de Janeiro to Lima, to Tierra del Fuego and back to Rio covering over 15,000 miles of spectacular scenery and without any consideration about the cost of gas. We tend to forget that the real cost of travel

In 1977 my trip and return airfare from Canada to Australia cost over $ 1700 dollars in 1977, so today is much cheaper to fly, even with a gouging airlines for fuel, extra baggage, no service and no pleasure. In my 40 years of travel I had to use travel agents to make even the simplest of reservations and buy tickets, do not even think for them ask if they had "been there, done that?" It was just a case of having no other options for buying trips. Now we have unlimited choices and can seek the best travel agents, better prices, better selections and information anywhere in the world for our trips – without ever leaving your home.
The Internet now offers travelers ideas and options of where to go, when to go, why go, what to do, who to book and how to save money and offset costs. We can search and find experts for each course option. If we are comfortable with the Internet we no longer have to go to a travel agency to make reservations and buy tickets, book except for some of the biggest travel companies that continues to produce glossy brochures and offer all the packages or tours that only sell through branch network. The Internet also allows those of us who are smart enough to know when looking for a top travel agent with experience, knowledge and skills (skills KEE) of destinations and activities on where to find them. There is no longer any need to use only our local agents that we can find another place in the world. When we do not need 'knowledge' and can do it ourselves, just surf the web so we can reserve directly with tour operators and travel wherever they have decided to go.
Some travel agencies operate their own tours, some are Wholesale and retail trade, some consumers limit selection to only sell their 'preferred' suppliers and some professional consultants with years of experience invested in the acquisition of experience, knowledge and skills and are worth their weight in gold to the discerning traveler. Beware though, as some are also called destination experts and some of these names merely require the agent to do a rudimentary test offered by the Department of Tourism, destination marketing groups or even tour operators and in my opinion, can damage the reputation of the travel industry. An expert is not necessarily an expert.
Traveling is probably the most used commercial Internet and the retail agents want to enjoy this exciting way to offer "knowledge" and his "kee 'skills to a global audience, not just their local community, they should accept the changes that are happening. Travellers have now able to find answers to the five W's of the journey and the important "how to" save money and offset the cost information with just one click away.
And then it occurred to me that even the prices of travel on the Internet often include an element of the commission even when they are sold directly the consumer. If we book directly with operators that should not have to pay retail prices as we are doing for ourselves what is an agent of normally would retail for us.
