Relocating to Florida – Florida Housing Requirements For Registration and Licensing of their vehicles
Florida is one of the most beautiful states in the country for driving, canoeing, flying, camping – you get the picture. But if you're bringing a vehicle for the state (and planning to operate it), you need to register it and / or obtain proper identification to boot. What follows is a quick summary of what you need to do.
Cars:
Like most states, home state of Florida demands that residents who plan to drive the state to apply for a Florida driver's license and maintain a valid car insurance. Although there are some exceptions, chances are good that you'll need to go through the process.
Obtaining a driver's license: If you have an out-of-state license has not expired beyond 30 days, you're in luck: you can Easily convert without making a written or road test. However, you still need to do a simple vision test. To schedule one, just contact your local DMV.
If you do not plan to drive in Florida, but still need a valid Florida ID, you can get an identification card instead. To qualify, you must present your social security card and provide another valid form of identification. Some countries also require that you are 12 years or more, so check with the guidelines of your local council to find out for sure. The cards are valid for four years and all the basics: photo, name, sex, address, date of birth, etc. (Those over 60 are issued "does not end" cards so they do not have to worry about the renewal.)
Obtaining Car Insurance: Florida Residency Requirements require that you insure your vehicle and you will not be able to register your vehicle until you do it. What else is required? Using an insurance company authorized to operate in the state. In some cases, your current company may just help you transfer your current policy of their new state, so give them a call for more details. Regardless, you must have insurance before you can register your vehicle.
Registration: If you are going to Florida, you must register your vehicle within 10 days of becoming a resident, becoming employed, or put your child in public school. Vehicles are registered for 12 months at a time, with "year" that begins in the month of birth. You will need to pay the entire year, if you are registering it in the middle of the year or not.
If you are registering your vehicle in Florida for the first time, you should have your number Vehicle Identification (VIN), officially verified. Tax collector's office can do this for you when you register your vehicle, or you can have it done by a law enforcement officer, notary or car dealer. If you choose the latter option, you must have that person fill Department Road Safety and Motor Vehicles DHSMV form 82042 to verify the VIN and mileage.
After registering your vehicle, you can get a title in Florida. To do this, have your proof of Florida insurance and title to your local county tax collector to obtain a title in Florida. (If the title is currently held by a holder privilege, they help you get the original sent to Florida).
