Boat Insurance San Francisco

What is the best way to go about buying a used sailboat?
I need a license? Safe? How long would it take the average person to learn to sail? I live in San Francisco. Where could I keep the Boat docked? I could live on the boat? I am willing to make an investment of about $ 15,000, but would be happy to spend less. I think I want a cruiser. Something that I can live and sail to Mexico. What is a good size? And the brands that I should look? Any and all tips are welcome. So if $ 15,000 will not cut anything decent as I realistically expect to spend for something I can take on trips to Mexico or in Hawaii. I'm not planning on sailing to Mexico tomorrow. I was curious about it so I asked the question. I do not know. Is there anything I should know about boats, but not? I'm not the expert.
This can be done. It's been done. I bought a 26 foot Westerly Centaur 10K. While I do not live in time integral, I did frequenlty cruising on it, (Bahamas), some for over two months and had so much fun on it as I do on my new 33 foot boat. Some of these boats have circumnavigated the globe. Similarly, Tania Aeibi (Read "Maiden Voyage" is a great read) and Brian Caldwell circumnavigaged Contessa 26s in that you can buy at this price. I had a friend who lived aboard a 30 foot boat in Puget Sound for over a year he bought for 10K. If you read the books and articles by the Pardeys, you will see that they are big fans of vessels under 30 meters and point out that, although still built boats may have some small disadvantags, ease of operation also makes them safer in some respects. They lived on boats this size for decades, sailing worldwide. Some older, solid, well built boats that have proven include: Westerly, Allmand, Contessa, Westsail, Morgan, Pearson Bristol, Alberg. I met a couple during the cruise in the Bahamas, which had bought a Pearson Vanguard under 10K, but spent considerable time taking into shape. They sailed around the Caribbean and Atlantic. Note that making the necessary updates to the appropriate ocean cruise can cost 30% or more of the price of the boat. This, of course, depend on condition of the boat to buy it, but well-equipped boats in good shape in general are not bargain shopping. A couple great sites and boats used are yachtworld.com boattrader.com. Check with your regional sailing publications as well. However, the best deals usually do not come from people who are actively trying to sell their sailing boats, but from old boats that have been sitting, possibly with rates of free storage. Often an owner who can not surf more willing to exit a boat just to have their care responsibilities. As another aswer said, I think you will find if you can expand your budget by 5-10K, you will find many more options available to you. If you want to know more about the cruise on a boat in an affordable budget, than those written by the Pardey boats, I recommend: "Ocean Cruisng on a budget" by Anne Hammick and "Voyaging on a small income" by Annie Hill. (Both in English). Some other questions about insurance: If you take a loan, having insurance is likely to be a condition of the loan. If you own your own boat, you're probalby not required to have this, but more and more marinas will not give you a space to slip without it. When coverage Bahamas gone through the roof after all the hurricanes in Florida, I bought a liability insurance only about 15% of that total would have been safe. I feel confident all risks involving my own boat, but not for others. Although, I think it's important to show that people can and have crossed the long-term budgets tight and affordable boats, I'm not recommending that you buy one and set off to learn to navigate by heading off to Baja. Read the books I mentioned and get some experience through courses in sailing crew or to other people. Real experince is not just as useful to help you decide which its priorities, its incredibly important for learning and being safe out there. Buying an affordable boat and traveling on a budget is something that many have done, but it is not easy or simple. Get some experience of experts, sailors and secure the next step to become clear.
