Test before you buy a Boat
Okay, so you found the boat of your dreams. What's the first thing you should you do? Try it! Test a boat involves much more than a quick cruise around the harbor! You should inspect the boat as a professional boat inspector.
A boat is a great buy. You need to know as much about a boat you need to know about a car. In fact, buy a boat may require further questioning.
It's hard to tell a quality of a boat that can cause you problems. For the average Joe, both can be well on the surface. But when you start deepening, you can simply find the truth.
Here is what you should do:
Open all doors to get the best view the structure of the boat
Look in the anchor locker to see the hull of the common platform to see if there is light coming through
When you're driving test the boat, put it through its paces in open water
Try different boats before making your final choice
And remember, a boat is not going to be beaten a good deal, regardless of price. If not kept abroad by its owner, chances are that they may not was maintained or mechanically.
Before buying a used boat you should make some security checks
Look for the builder's plate EC showing that the ship complies with the EU Recreational Craft Directive (RCD) regulations.
Make a note of the hull identification number or the vessel (HIN or NIC). It will be a reference like this – GB A3456 G4 04-XYZ.
GB – the country where the vessel was built XYZ – Manufacturer ID A3456 – serial number G boat – the month of manufacture (A = January) 4 – year of manufacture 2004 – the year of the model
Ask see the Statement of Compliance to confirm that the vessel meets all requirements.
Ask the original purchase invoice, which shows that VAT was paid the boat.
Sounds simple, but make sure the boat is not registered as stolen and have no outstanding mortgage on it. There are many companies that will do it for you.
If you are buying a canal boat, ask to see the boat's safety certificate – all recreational craft are required to have one.
Finally, use your trial. It may not be a professional boat inspector, but you should be able to tell how the boat feels. Stand on the side the boat and see how the falls side – it is best to do this test in calm conditions. A boat that is hard on the water will provide a comfortable cruise.
If in doubt, get your new boat professionally inspected. A good marine inspection will provide great peace of mind. Checks will include; rot under the floor, engine testing and testing of bilge pump and all that will require you to spend money.
