Turning on a Boat?
I need to wire a boat from scratch and I'm not sure how. I'll need to run the lights, electric start engine stern, and the gauges and everything that I need to get going. Any help would be great!
All the answers (so far) have good nuggets information. The most important thing is: if you do not know what you're doing, or even if you're a little unsure, seek help! wire current, is not difficult, but you should watch, a seemingly small mistake can set your boat on fire and it will happen when you're in the water (Do not scoff at the Murphy's Law). fuses are a must. Do not skip them, a blown fuse WILL save your boat fire. Fuses that blow frequently in a system properly designed to make it through one of two reasons: the system is overloaded (too many oversized loads or a load), or the circuit is short-circuited (Freight damaged wires, damaged, etc.). Do not assume that the fuse is too small for the circuit, the objective is to protect the fuse wire, not load! Select the gauge according to the needs of the circuit, and choose the fuse accordingly. If you are not sure exactly how much current you need in a given circuit, get a good rough estimate (based on real research, not think) and go to a larger size. Go to a larger size if you are running a length larger than ~ 15 feet, or if the cable is a channel that will not allow good heat dissipation. This is important enough to repeat: do not ignore fuses, fuse each circuit according to wire size, and not change the size of the fuse for whatever reason, the distribution bus. bars are very useful for the circuit and help to avoid having to pull 20 + foot runs continuously. Do NOT use your house wiring solid boats, you should use stranded, as the natural ability to bend the wires is required to avoid cracking. Shall be copper (aluminum or NO AL / CU) for the same reason. Aluminum also has more resistance and will heat up more with the same charge. I believe there are versions of the marine stranded copper (low corrosion?). Use solder-less connectors (crimp-on) wire as soldiers are solid wires, prone to cracking, and different metals can act as a bettery and corrode quickly. I did much more than my share of wiring (house, car, boat, robots, etc.). Take your time, pay attention to detail, follow a separate ground wire for each circuit (not "frame" reasons on a boat), and do not hesitate to get a good reference book (Or three), if for no other reason than to do a sanity test.
