The Gods that fell from heaven

Moms Story

This section of the story is written by me from journal entries Dads and story of a mother wrote for a magazine in Rhodesia.

We were in Portsmouth to read a letter possible for South Africa, the fog was running around the sheds at the dock when they are located on the right do not lose more and went inside, MTB (motor Boat) seemed enormous in the shed, and was being converted for use by passengers, who were interested in chartering the ship to take us in Durban, South Africa, my husband had decided that there would be more opportunities in a new land, he got a job at Lever Bros. in Durban, and had put our house and the coal business in the market, sold so much now that we come to London to get a ticket to South Africa

In 1946, it seemed impossible to book any kind of way to South Africa without delay after spending a week in London were futile on the verge of giving up when we heard of the above letter, the foreman came down the ladder that was against the side of the ship to meet us, went upstairs and stood on the deck.

After about an hour to see the facilities available, we went out and caught the train back to London, George " my husband was quiet all the way that he did not tell me at the time, he had a sense of certainty within it about taking his family on a trip around 6000 miles by three oceans to South Africa in a plywood boat.

By the time he had arrived from London, he had decided that the boat would be the risk very large, on his arrival at the hotel had a message for them to contact a travel agency that had been earlier in the week, they did it and made arrangements to be there first thing in the morning, they awoke early and were offered passage of others but none of them suited my husband,

We were about to leave travel agency, when we were called back, "where interested in a private letter? A small Avro Anson plane was available, the cost of what would to be shared by a prominent businessman, also having the same difficulties regarding travel, with the optimism of youth who agreed to meet the next day.

The meeting was at the headquarters of Air Research in CL Cromwell Road, where he met with Lt. Col. Lawrence, immediately liked what we saw, and took the option, we again Liverpool to finish the match, and to bid farewell to friends and family, the last time we were moving and had some meaning in our lives.

We said goodbye to Liverpool to London on the train and George bought a newspaper, a report on the second page caught his eye, a chartered MTB who had left Portsmouth had floundered Bay of Biscay with the loss of all aboard, he wondered if perhaps the same one that had looked,

We met at the Grosvenor Hotel, Victoria, and took a train to Croydon from then transferred to Gatwick Airport, where our little Anson expected on the tarmac, was the25th June and were greeted by our pilot and navigator and we met our traveling companion Wenlock a deputy for the first time

Our adventure that nearly ended in tragedy began on June 25, 1946, which took off around noon and landed at Le Bourget, for lunch and to the airport in Marseille mariguana stop for the night.

The fuel capacity of our small aircraft needed to have to make frequent stops, allowing our drivers to refuel and its passengers to partake of any refreshments available at hotel also had to be scheduled for the next night stop.

We spent our first night in an uncomfortable inn French in Marseille, and with a quick early morning Next, flew over Sardinia was very beautiful nestled in the middle of the Mediterranean, who arrived in Tunis for lunch, then to Tripoli that were sent by the start Castle Benito, where an army barracks was our accommodation for the second night.

According to the mother of my brother and I were fascinated by the camel caravans leaving for their long journey across the desert, but were intimidated by the size of the camels and kept our distance to get to bed early in the morning dawn following.

Benino stopped in for lunch and Eli Aden near Benghazi for fuel, I saw many burnt plans around Benghazi, in the desert, he flew to Cairo where he landed in Abmaza, we Palace in Heliopolis, was spacious and cool, after our hot and dusty trip so far.

With the kids bathroom taken and sleeping, we went down to dinner was served outdoors on the terrace of marble, with millions of stars and a crescent moon hanging overhead, it was a magical night, as we were not leaving until later the pilot suggested a trip to Cairo.

We took a tram and it proved to be chilling. Passengers stormed aboard and hung for every conceivable inch like flies on fly paper, the driver of the tram threw us down the mountain at a speed to break the neck with bell constantly ringing in our ears.

A visit to Gropp, where the ice cream was superb, considerably cooled us down after our walk-raising in the city, decided to take a back taxi, who was also an eye opener I was glad he had a good horn, we were eager to be on our way we packed and left for airport.

Unlike the big jets of today, has not reached a very high altitude, passing through the desert we could see the convoys of camels caravan criss passing beneath us, the charred remains of aircraft and tanks brought the reality of war had been fought there is so little time in the desert below us.

We stopped to spend the night in Luxor on the banks of the Nile to the pyramids in the distance, we arrived late, were seated at a dinner with the head of BOAC, Frank Edge, who was fascinated to hear about our journey so far, could not sleep a pretty good night as the ceiling was alive with sand lizards.

We left on August 30 to Wadi Halfa, landed for fuel and lunch, too hot to eat, the last good rain for 150 years, went to Khartoum, was at the Grand Hotel, despite huge fan swirling around the hotel, the heat was intense, our early arrival allowed us time to visit a small zoo, a welcome change for two boys accustomed with the tiny cabin of a small plane.

Off early the next morning Malakai arrived for lunch, a flying boat landed in front of us, the journey was very rough, the worst part of the trip so far, the country under horrible, the country has changed so dramatically took off the green swamp wilderness, to Juba for more fuel and a bad sandwich.

Unable to land in Nairobi to put down on Kasumi, stayed at the hotel and met our friends the flying boat, very hot, I saw many elephants as we go through swamps in Juba, the country pretty much green as we fly over Kenya and Uganda, it was very cold, when we went to Tabora, Tanganyika and the Mybeya, we had traveled for seven days, it was July 1.

We were accommodated in cabins and warned not to move out, like leopards often descended from the hills. Fortunately we left the next morning without incident, not realizing that the nightfall, we'd be in a very precarious situation.

It was the intention of the pilot to refuel at Fort Jameson, then in Rhodesia North, it was anticipated that we should get there at noon for lunch. Now we were flying low in the country of thick bush and I saw many herds of elephants roaming the woods and wading in rivers.

We had been airborne for several hours now, and lunch was almost over, we could hear our browser knocking out a message on the Morse key. Suddenly, George grabbed my arm and whispered. "We're in trouble young lady, I just heard the first of May will call out".

Before I realized the implication of this observation, the cabin door opened and came out and said our browser. "I have been trying to contact Fort Jameson for some time, but no response. We're out of fuel and have to make a forced landing, "he looked around and continued to talk Strap children well within the belt and pad around them with clothes and blankets.

We do not have time to think about what could happen, we had done what he had suggested and as the plane was used in the war had yet entered the sirens, they were playing out as we feel the plane bank and drop, we were busy trying to console Safe and two boys.

Thank God! And a very good rider, who guided the plane to a small clearing elephant grass, which grows to a height of 8 to 10 feet. We landed and when I looked out the window, all I could see was the left propeller of the plane to cut the grass that was flying up and over the cabin of dust clouds.

The plane must have hit a hole anteater feel that releasing the propeller bent over the hood, after hitting the ground. We finally came to a halt very irregular, the silence was for a few moments, the cabin door opened and a very nervous team saw that his passengers were all in one part.

George went to the door with the browser, first by scratching the bag Richards, they walked along the wing and jumped down and around front of the aircraft, who returned after their inspection and noticed that George had one of the toy guns Richards arrested at his waist, I started laughing "What you want do with it? "I replied.

Now! We were facing a big problem. We had landed in the heart of the valley Lwangwa in district Jumbe, near the border with the Belgian Congo, a large play area with a smashed plane, without food or water, and most importantly, without weapons or ammunition case of attack by wild animals.

The inspection of the damage revealed by Anson wings cracked and badly damaged propeller, as we were all in solving the aircraft suddenly saw the tall grass waving in a few minutes we were surrounded by natives.

Terrible thoughts crossed my mind cannibals, George Richards made a grab for a toy gun that he had returned to his bag and went into the open door of the plane, my fears were unfounded, from the back of the crowd African milling, a pushed forward and said: "I Augustin! Mission boy. I speak English."

Much relieved, the pilot asked him where can help. "Yes, there was a mission in the mountains 40 miles away, but he would seek the chief, whose name was Nikanya," the head must have been his way as they arrived five minutes later.

We verified by Augustin acting as interpreter for the chief who had a white priest about 35 miles away in a village, it sends a message immediately, took pictures of them all around the aircraft and really enjoyed it.

We set up an external contact and made Arial Salisbury. Help that comes, we can only give them a vague idea where we were, which was approximately 86 miles northwest of Fort Jameson and the reference in that village was was given by Augustin katemo kopje which was just above the small village.

Augustin had suggested that we walk to his village where his family would be happy to house us, I had a feeling that as far as the star ratings would be lucky to been a glint in the 5 star ratings, where we were headed, he suggested that theNkosi (male boss Dad) Nkosikas (mother Head female), and picannins (children) to follow him, a runner was thrown out and a convoy of African excited followed carrying our luggage.

It was late afternoon and we were walking through the dense forest, the ground was covered with leaves Mopani, which is the favorite diet of the elephants and taking account the number of elephants we had seen before coming down, I was very apprehensive, but I overpowered my fears as nobody seemed particularly worried.

We came out in thick bush land and the Africans who accompanied us were carrying children on their backs, I remember in particular the human head had gone ahead and erected a small office grass where food and water was provided. The inhabitants of a local village many of whom had never before seen a white man looked through every cranny, trying to see the gods whites who had fallen from the sky.

It was early evening we were all pretty exhausted, we walked for hours, the rough territory was taking its toll on our feet, a few miles from the village seemed endless, to our great relief, the lights of many small fires lit up the darkness.

We finally arrived at the corral of Augustine, who was immediately surrounded by residents and a big indaba occurred. Eventually, though, were led into a native grass hut, the unique comfort of two lower beds that were native made without mattresses, but a kind of woven leather thong. This luxury was reserved for people of note.

After our crash landing and a long journey through the jungle, who were all at the point of collapse, but some effort had to be done. The decision to take me three Ostermilk cans and a small pot, also a package of tea, proved to be a God-send, and I was able to give children a nutritional drink. Having no blankets, we had to use whatever clothes we had with them to bed, and eventually they slept.

We went outside where the other members of our group were discussing the best way to effect a rescue. , This proved to be useless, and can only hope that the coordinates we had given them were close enough so that aid from any source would be soon.

Dawn comes early to the African bush and its inhabitants, human or not with the first light. Young Richard took a look around at the last address and said: "We're going home mom. I do not like this hotel." Easier said than done, and we were not just grateful to have provided a meal for a carnivorous animal on our recent trek to this small community.

While the men were discussing how to take us back to civilization, as we call it, I had to deal with internal problems, for example. Facilities for bathing, food, washing clothes, to say nothing of the language, Spruit next was our water supply and children splashed happily, surrounded by a group of admiring piccanins. My washing was performed by rubbing and banging it against large stones in this little creek, and my blue wool Jaeger suit, was never the same again.

We knew our distress call was heard, and had been established contacts with Salisbury, but we were unsure of the coordinates given in the evening, we saw a plane. I later learned that was piloted by Mr. Jed Spencer Southern Rhodesia, but we were passed by without recognition.

The next day, the RAF aircraft were flying grid pattern in the west of us, because they were flying low, but were unable to locate us. compact powder which then quite large, and my course was the chrome to a clearing, I opened my with its large mirror and shone in the direction of the search planes, catch the rays of the sun in the mirror. Instant response to 3-directed plans for us and was abandoned Message: "Stay where you are, I'm on location."

The next day, the planes flew right at us and dropped by parachute supplies, the goods were chosen by the villagers, they came back with two cargo bag. We had six blankets, which were more than welcome, because it was too cold to night. Also in the paratroopers was a loaf of bread, meat tough, oxo, Bovril and raisins. Without butter, tea or sugar we could have done with. Also the bag was a 303 rifle without ammunition, George grabbed it by the barrel and said to me, "Do not worry I'll Dot club bloody lion to death"

The runner who had been sent to the Catholic Mission in the mountains, returned in the evening with Father Robertson, who made a huge fuss about how he was the first white man who had seen since the accident, he told us that a rescue operation was under way at Fort Jameson and had sent word to our location.

Bernard Hesson police chief for the Northern Rhodesia and the District Commissioner John Sugg were underway with two trucks, but because of the inaccessibility of the region, they were having to cut the road and build bridges to cut trees and four gallon cans of paraffin, the Father tells us that he found the only place the land within a radius of 50 miles.

John Sugg Hesson and Bernard arrive with a number of Ascaris, they were unable to go further with the trucks and had to leave them about six miles, we left at around 12 30 and traversed dense forest in intense heat, I thought I would give up when we were reaching exhaustion, we were delighted to see two trucks under the shade of some trees.

There was a circle with fixed screens mats, tables and chairs and tea ready after tea off, let the trucks to a track, I've never seen these places to take a truck down the steep slopes and cliffs. A very steep truck slid back three times. Sugg sent to a nearby village and 100 Indians arrived, be pulled or pushed us up or down the slopes, the job took several hours.

As the directed cracks in the darkness around these winding tracks still amazes me, in most cases were in first or second gear and our top speed was 8 km / h, about 21:00 we made a stop for a meal, we were very hungry.

Eating in the bush is an art when done right. Car headlights are left on the grass and mats spread on the ground, this was our first introduction to the popular braai, the children were happy to run around and explore, a nice meal topped with Brandy, water and tea. We packed and the truck continued to back along tracks almost impossible for many hours.

Moores arrived mission on January 30 the following morning Sugg was one of the bungalows and struck a priest he knew (Heritage Lord). The conversation in the dark, it was great fun, including "good gods, "etc., followed by the appearance of Mr. George Heritage, not too dressed eclectically, noting that it was bloody cold.

We went with him to the cottage of Father Williams, who followed another funniest dialogue in the dark, with plenty of "good gods" again. Soon the father came out and greeted us well. He said he was sure that everyone needed a brandy hard and bloody was the certainty that he needed one himself, were all allocated and bungalows were all so tired, and went straight to sleep.

After trying to sleep in a bed in her panties for three nights, I was starting to feel like a zebra, so my night's rest Mission was pure bliss, the next morning, a good soak in a hot bath for me and the children, a breakfast and a leisure walk around the Station Mission, it was soon time to say goodbye and thank our new friends for their hospitality.

We were still 50 miles from Fort Jameson, and went beyond the the afternoon, arriving early evening in the Hotel where we had arranged Rangleys accommodation, a warm bath, good food and as we were still trying to recover our arduous journey to bed early, it was Friday, July 5 and were looking forward to a relaxing weekend.

We were advised to stay near the hotel at night leopards, descended from the hills at night and attacked a man and his dog outside Knowles Hotel, and met with two RAF officers who were making inquiries about the forced landing.

Our arrival caused a stir among residents who were mainly tobacco growers, and discuss our future plans in relation establish themselves in South Africa, we were advised to look at Salisbury in Rhodesia South fate had taken a hand and our hard landing led us to change our plans. After several days of rest, flew to Salisbury in a Rapide piloted by Mr. Jed Spencer, we were so impressed they decided to settle in this new and growing country

My Mothers father once wrote in his diary

"There is a destiny that shapes our end

Rough hew them as we do. "
