In April 1969, a long wheelbase version was added to the range. The short wheelbase also continued in production for many more years. The long wheelbase version, was not sold in the U.S. market until 1972.
Although the name "Hilux", it was a highly luxurious vehicle only when compared to the Stout. Hilux is designed and assembled by Hino Motors to increase Brisk Anthem, Briski and Stout or replace them in some markets. For the U.S. market, the body style was only a regular cab short bed and all were rear wheel drive. We use a typical configuration a truckload of arms and coil springs up front and a live axle with leaf springs at the rear. A four-speed manual transmission was standard.

Toyota Trekker
In North America, the Hilux has seen the use of four-wheel drive. He had front axle suspension and a solid sheet. The agency has seen an overhaul that included single round headlights and a body less complex. These trucks became known as first generation 4WDs. It was the first Hilux with automatic transmission.
1983 SR5 4X4 Pickup
In 1981 an agreement was established vehicle development between Toyota, Winnebago Industries and two other aftermarket customizers. This was to allow Toyota to enter the SUV market in North America. Vehicles that resulted from this collaboration were the Trekker (Trailer) Wolverine, and Trailblazer (Griffith). All three used the Hilux 4×4 RV cab and chassis, and a rear section all fiberglass (Trailblazer had a steel bed with a fiberglass top). There were at least 1,500 Trekkers, 400 Trailblazers and an unknown number of Wolverines sold in North America. Research and development work on the Trekker lead to the development of the 4Runner, which was launched in 1984. The 4Runner has been sold in Australia North America and the UK, and in some other markets, like Japan, was called the Hilux Surf.
Towards the end of production run SR5 (1983 model year) Toyota introduced the Mojave luxury for the U.S. market as a limited production (3,500 units), a model with options not available in any other Toyota pickup. List price U.S. $ 8308, it featured seats, two-speaker radio multiplex, chrome front and rear bumpers and the Toyota logo any grid or back. Cruise control, power steering, air conditioning and were optional. He was fed per liter, the SR5 standard of 2.4 (150 cu in), four in line.

The 1984 redesign introduced the Xtracab two-line option extended cab. There was also a type of fuel injection, the 22R-E. Two diesel engines were also offered the 2L and the turbocharged 2L-T. Diesel engines were stopped in the U.S. after the 1986 model year, this was due to higher performance expectations of customers and the wide availability of cheap gasoline. The following year saw the introduction a turbo option, the 22R-TE. The solid front axle was replaced with an independent front suspension and torsion bar setup in the 4×4 model, in 1986, and optional automatic locking front hubs and an electronic transfer case was also added. A V6 engine was introduced in 1988.
Toyota introduced a new generation Hilux in most markets in late 1988, but the fourth generation remained in production until 1997 in South Africa Toyota says it was due to the South African "content law" and therefore it was cheaper to keep producing the fourth generation Hilux, rather than retool the factory for the fifth generation.

The next redesign in 1988 saw an option in the long-wheelbase 122 in (309.9 cm) versus 103 in (261.6 cm) to adjust the wheelbase. A piece of wall cargo box eliminated the rust-prone seams found in previous models. The V6 Xtracab SR5 earned Motor Trend Truck of the Year award that year. Production began in the NUMMI plant in Fremont, California in 1991.

The name Tacoma comes from a word Lushootseed the volcano Tahoma in the Mountains Cascade, known as Mount Rainier in English, which is visible from Tacoma, Washington.
The Tacoma frame differs from the Hilux frame, although both appear similar from outside. Both the Tacoma and Hilux variants are sold in Mexico.
The ninth generation of compact pickups from Toyota, was radically updated, with a new structure and body, new suspension and new engines. All versions now presented coil springs in front with an independent suspension type of arm and leaf springs at the rear.
The Tacoma was restyled in 1998, when the front panel and chassis were the main changes, as well as adding new badges. It has also been restyled in 2001, when a "cab" again (crew cab) option was added, and a flashy S-Runner was offered as well.

Both the Tacoma and Hilux were updated in 2005. The Tacoma was based on the new Land Cruiser Prado chassis, while the Hilux rides on an updated version of the ladder frame found in versions earlier. The new Hilux got bigger, now classified as a midsize pickup truck. The Tacoma had a new 4.0-liter V6 engine that produces 236 hp (176 kW) and 266 ftlbf (361 Nm) of torque. Its design was very similar to the 4Runner.
Those sold in European markets, Australians and Asians are constructed and assembled in Thailand, and are known as the Hilux Vigo. For the South African markets and the Icelandic Hilux is built in Durban, South Africa in December 2009, is the best selling vehicle The South Africa that are sold in South America are: Argentina (same as the previous generation Hilux). The Hilux Vigo platform was used as the basis for Toyota IMV program which spawned the Innova MPV and Fortuner SUV / PPV.
In Malaysia, the Hilux is only available in 2.5 L with the option of simple cabin or cockpit double. [Citation needed] The double cab model has an automatic transmission variant. It uses the same engine as other Asian countries (in-line 4 cylinder, 16 valve, DOHC Turbo Diesel common rail direct injection), but the specifications for the models in Malaysia are slightly different in that its Maximum output is 75 kW at 3600 rpm and maximum torque of 260 Nm at 1600-2400 rpm.
The Hilux is availble was in Singapore, with a 3.0 liter engine and the option Cabin single or double occupancy. [Citation needed] It uses the same engine as in other countries (in-line 4-cylinder, 16 valve, DOHC Turbo Diesel Injection common rail direct), however, this engine is built in Japan (also used by Prado) instead of Argentina. It is also used by taxi services and Singapore Police Force.

Recreational vehicle (RV) were built on truck chassis Toyota Chinook since the introduction of Toyota in 1977 in a normal frame of law until 1993, when the last Winnebago and national coaches have been completed in his last remaining 1992 chassis. Since that time there have been a number of manufacturers who used the small Toyota truck chassis to build small homes class C motor, including Chinook, RBR, New Horizons, Coachman, Huntsman, National (in both dolphins and the names Seabreaze), Winnebago Industries (under both the Itasca and Winnebago name), Gardner and Pacific (in the name Sunrader). Beginning in 1986, manufacturers began to use RV heavier Toyota 1 ton cab and chassis.
Reputation
The Hilux has gained a reputation for exceptional sturdiness and reliability, even during sustained heavy use and / or abuse, and is often referred to as "the indestructible car". This was further reinforced in the motoring show Top Gear from BBC, when a 1988 Hilux with 190,000 miles (308,000 km) on the odometer was abused extraordinary (In 3 series, episodes 5 and 6). This was to lead him down a flight of stairs, scraping buildings, crashing headlong into a tree, being washed out to sea and completely submerged, leading him through a garden, dropping a caravan for him, beating with a wrecking ball, setting the cabin and the room on fire, and finally put it on top of a block of 240 feet (73 m) apartment that was later destroyed by a controlled demolition. Although he was now suffering serious structural damage, the truck was still running after being repaired without spare parts and only with typical tools and equipment that could be found in the toolbox of a car, such as screwdrivers, engine oil, and a key, however WD40 was used to get the engine going, after been recovered from the sea. The Hilux is currently one of the decorations at the bottom of the Top Gear studio.
In the series of 2006 (8 series, episode 3), a Hilux was chosen by Jeremy Clarkson as his platform for the creation of an amphibious vehicle. With help, Clarkson truck equipped with a huge outboard, ironically made by Honda, and a steering mechanism in the pickup bed. The truck, redubbed the "Toybota" was driven by Clarkson over several miles by road and two miles (3 km) offshore, before capsizing during a quick turn. Once recovered, the vehicle was transferred back to the Top Gear Studio, where one said Clarkson confident that he would be the only one capable of driving the car home, since it was the indestructible Hilux. However, Kelly could not get the Hilux started which led his co-hosts to believe that Clarkson had finally destroyed the "indestructible." In the series of 2007 (Series 10, Episode 2), Clarkson opted a Nissan pickup instead of a Hilux for a second amphibious challenge, successfully crossing the English Channel in the vehicle.
In 2007, Top Gear ran a special program in which Clarkson and James May raced a customized model Hilux 2005 to 1996 magnetic north pole from Northern Canada against Richard Hammond using a dog sled. The race, known as the Hilux Arctic Challenge, made the truck the first car to reach the magnetic North Pole.
Outside of television, these vehicles have been known to exceed 300,000 miles (500,000 km ~), with regular maintenance.
