In August 2007 Venue – Botswana

In May I was lucky enough to return to Botswana. Having last been there in the heat of December, the end dry season was fantastic to go out in the cold end of the rains and see the Delta begins to fill with the annual flood waters from Angola – is to fill every week.

This time I started to feel the essence of what makes different and that Botswana is an exhibition game from a mokoro (dug out canoe). The mokoro is the most peaceful to enjoy your surroundings without the noise to disturb the red lechwe jumping through morass and elephants moving slowly through the observation of birds and lilies fantastic.

In Kunana Camp Delta saw a couple of young males (I think about eight to ten years age) who received their certificates for the "Young Explorers" Of course they had just competed. They were smiling proudly and clearly had an amazing time and had been busy while parents were able to enjoy a game drive on your own!

Camp Stanley I was lucky enough to meet rapidly Doug who can spend a whole morning walking around with, along with his three elephants. There is no elephant safaris here, but with these elephants have been in 18 years, he knows everything there is to know about Ellies and you can interact with them and then walk through the woods with them at his side, which in my book is an even more impressive. I I felt very safe with them at my side and feeling extraordinarily small!

In the region Linyanti Kwando I stayed at the Lagoon, where I was fortunate to have a great tour guide, Russ (imagine a user with the voice of Louis Armstrong) and a phenomenal tracker sitting on the hood. The tracker Russ stopped at one point he had seen a reflection of something on the side of the track … he came out was a spider! What a sight! It was the most fun night drive I have been long and we saw a huge variety of nocturnal animals.

A quick lunch in Namibia, the Caprivi Strip felt was too short a time to spend in beautiful Ntwala Island Lodge before heading to Zambia and Vic Falls. Having done a temporary work assignment in South Luangwa, Zambia, was almost a crime not to have visited the Falls than I was delighted when we were taken on a helicopter to fly Falls – absolutely incredible, especially as it was the end of the rains in Zambia and the Zambezi was bursting at the seams.

What a fantastic trip and a great experience of being in three African countries all in a day and only a plane ride – this space is incredible and a multitude of planes, boats, cars and helicopters to get in! I'm still recovering and my drive to work is a little less exciting but still very pretty!
