Boat Seats Upholstery Material

Upholstery Boat?
I want to upholster my boat back. Banks old had some kind of thin clear plastic over the foam. I need to know what it was, they went to buy some and how I should use it. I assume it was to protect the foam from water saturation. I'm kind of thinking that he must go on top of the foam, but is open at the bottom for ventilation if the humidity should happen to get the foam anyway.
