Hotel revenues in South Florida continue to fall
The peak holiday season from South Florida continues to be battered by a decline in the global economy as hotels cuts rates to fill beds. <br>
February numbers released by Smith Travel Research show hotels in Miami-Dade suffer most, with room revenue falling faster than they did in the winter following the 2001 terrorist attacks. In February ugly came after a disappointing contribution to the Miami International Boat Show, traditionally the busiest weekend of the hotels of the year. <br>
Last month in Miami-Dade County, occupancy levels fell by 10 points in one year to 73 percent, despite a 15 percent reduction in rates of $ 180 per night. Discounts helped over Broward and the Keys, where prices fell at a similar rate, but occupancy fell just 3 points in Broward and remained stable in the Keys. <br>
''Our business is not as bad,''said Broward tourism director Nikki Grossman. “ But we had to lower the rate to get their business.''<br>
A wave of new hotel rooms in Miami-Dade has a far more competitive market than it was a year ago, with rooms for 10 percent more available than in winter 2007. <br>
As one of the most expensive markets large hotel in the country, Miami-Dade is also suffering from what the Commerce Department said Thursday passed a 22 percent reduction in travel costs across the country. <br>
At the Doral Golf Resort & Spa, conferences are attracting people less and vacationers are unable to book trips to the lush hotel which is known for its annual golf professional. <br>
Chris Bielski, Director Sales of the resort, said that Americans seem more suspicious than they were traveling in the winter after the 2001 attacks. <br>

The new figures also suggest that Smith Travel Trip crisis has more resistance than the passage post-9/11. <br>
February 2002 marked the first time since the attacks of Miami-Dade, when he saw declining revenues room less than 20 percent. This loss of 17 per cent of the months was significantly better than in January 2002 fall of 24 percent, according to data from Smith Travel. <br>

Jean Francois Mourier, a consultant bookings for hotels in Miami Beach, said his customers are seeing revenues fall more room in March than they did in February. <br>

But like other hoteliers, he's hoping the recent surge in stock prices will encourage consumers to start making vacation plans again. <br>
