Sewing Canvas Boat Covers

Can a home sewing machine handle typical sturdy canvas? Tell them to make a Boat cover?

I am a machine technician Sewing and will tell you … YES. Most any sewing machine will sew whatever you want with the right line, needle and tension adjustment. But the question is for how long? Not much time with the newer machines, plastic. The gears will not take place and motor belt may slip or burn out .. For this type of machine you need the old one with all steel gears, and preferably one without the belt as a singer or a Singer 15-91 201. These are not hard to find. eBay, Craigslist, etc. Even an old man with a belt will do OK as a Singer 66 (most common), but be sure to have a suitable needle, maybe a size 18 and change them every two hours. Discussion is also important, you need upholstery or button thread. The heavier the fabric loose upper tension needs to be. Practice scrap good until its top and bottom. You will also need to adjust the presser foot pressure so it will eat right. There are attachments called Walking Foot you can attach that will move the top layer of material along with the bottom layer. These help immensely. Any questions do not hesitate to ask. There are many domestic machines heavy, not just the plastic. Good luck.
